Euralarm: Position Paper on Thermographic Fire Detectors (TFD)

A new position paper has been released by the Euralarm Fire Section addressing the growing use of Thermographic Fire Detectors (TFD) and the current lack of a dedicated European standard.
The document provides a set of recommendations aimed at improving clarity, transparency and consistency in the market.
The paper also stresses the importance of distinguishing between the use of TFDs as certified flame detectors and their use in broader applications, as this affects compliance requirements and performance expectations.

“The use of Thermographic Fire Detectors (TFD) is increasing – Euralarm states. – However, there is no published European standard for TFD cameras while ISO 7240-33 is still under preparation.
TFD cameras can respond to flames and can be certified in accordance with EN54-10 (Flame detectors – Point detectors) as flame detectors. The essential characteristics of EN 54-10, which are fulfilled by a TFD solution are in this case listed in its DoP.
If the product is used as a flame detector, installation rules for flame detectors must apply in any case. If the product is not used as a flame detector, some confusion and problems may arise in the market on the meaning of the certification. For this reason, Euralarm is providing the following recommendations”.
